YES Statement on Hate Crimes Targeting the Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander Community

In recent weeks there has been troubling news of hate crimes targeting the Asian and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. These events are tragic and highlight a serious problem that has now been significantly escalated by the pandemic. At YES we recognize that the very real threat of discrimination, verbal torment,  physical violence, and death may trigger trauma, fear, and immense worry. We want to be very clear in our support of the Asian and AAPI community, and our intention to help eradicate this racism. This must stop.

To all in our Asian and AAPI community, we celebrate you and all of your significant contributions to making the greater Pacific Northwest a better place.  We value and welcome you as leaders, colleagues, employees, business partners, and neighbors. We are also grateful and inspired by those of you who are included in the children, youth, and families we serve.

To our wider community, it is often tragic times that become catalysts for healing, change, and connection. Please know that Youth Eastside Services (YES) is deeply committed to racial equity, and to working in solidarity to end systemic racism and stop hate crimes, harassment, and discrimination We all deserve to live a life in which we can thrive free of such impacts and experience safety regardless of who we are, what we look like, and what part of the world we come from.
