Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment which helps people who struggle with managing their emotions. DBT combines standard cognitive-behavioral techniques for emotion regulation and reality-testing with concepts of distress tolerance, acceptance and mindful awareness.

The young adult DBT skills groups are for individuals between the ages of 13 and 18 who are struggling with things such as intense emotions, relationship challenges, impulse behavior, self-harm, anger and painful emotions which feel unmanageable.

Clients in skills group are required to see a DBT individual therapist. Skills group is similar to taking a class. Clients learn and practice skills from four different modules.

The 16-week 90-minute class teaches skills in the following areas:
  1. Core Mindfulness skills, which help individuals control and regulate their attention and learn to be more "present" in their daily life.
  2. Interpersonal Effectiveness skills, which help individuals to negotiate relationships with others by asking for what they want and need or by saying no to requests in an effective manner.
  3. Emotion Regulation skills, which help individuals to recognize and validate their own emotions as well as teach them how to reduce the intensity of their emotions.
  4. Distress Tolerance skills, which help individuals tolerate stressful situations and make healthier choices when under distress.
*A limited number of sliding-scale fees are available.

Group participants are encouraged to attend 12-Step meetings for additional support but it’s not a requirement for Recovery Group participation.
