Recognizing signs of substance abuse
Is my child abusing drugs or alcohol?
Youth Eastside Services offers these suggestions for helping parents determine whether their children may be abusing drugs and/or alcohol, and steps to take if they are:
- Look for a change in behavior (more quick-tempered or volatile), a change in friends, a loss of interest in things that were once important, a drop in school performance, missing money or alcohol from the home, and attempts to conceal substance abuse (use of eye drops, room deodorizers, perfumes and colognes).
- If they see evidence of substance abuse, parents should try to stay calm and tell their children in a non-threatening way that they know they're using. Approach it as a family problem, expressing love and concern.
- Explain that a trust has been broken, and ask the child what he or she is willing to do to regain that trust. Say you'll do whatever it takes to keep them safe.
- Be a parent, not a friend. Set clear boundaries and real consequences. If a child continues using, for example, tell her you have no choice but to get her into drug and alcohol counseling. Be prepared to withhold privileges (anything outside of food, shelter and clothing).
- Know where your child is, who her friends are and how she's spending her free time. And keep the lines of communication open.
